Defensive Player of the Year (DPOY)

Annual award recognizing the NBA's best defensive player — a significant but often undervalued Hall of Fame credential.

The NBA Defensive Player of the Year award has been given since 1982–83, recognizing the league's best individual defender as voted by a media panel. The award has been dominated by big men who protect the rim, though perimeter defenders like Gary Payton and Marcus Smart have also won.

DPOY winners who also contributed offensively (Hakeem Olajuwon, Ben Wallace, Giannis Antetokounmpo) have strong Hall of Fame cases. However, the award alone is not sufficient for induction — Ben Wallace, a four-time DPOY with limited offensive numbers, waited years before committee selection.

Multiple DPOY awards signal elite defensive impact over a sustained period. When combined with offensive production and All-NBA selections, DPOY strengthens a player's HOF case significantly.

AllFame includes DPOY in the Awards dimension for NBA players, with modest weight compared to MVP and All-NBA selections.
