Usage Rate (USG%)

The percentage of team plays a player uses while on the court — a measure of offensive responsibility and volume.

Usage Rate estimates the percentage of team possessions a player uses while on the court, ending in a field goal attempt, free throw attempt, or turnover. The league average is approximately 20% (since five players share the court).

Usage Rate benchmarks: - 35%+: historically dominant usage (Harden 2019: 40.5%) - 30–34%: primary scorer, high volume - 25–29%: above-average offensive role - 20–24%: average - Below 20%: complementary role

Usage Rate is context for other stats, not a quality measure on its own. A player with 33% usage and 60% TS% is far more valuable than one with 33% usage and 52% TS%. Russell Westbrook's MVP season combined historic usage (41.7%) with strong efficiency.

For Hall of Fame analysis, Usage Rate helps distinguish between primary scorers and complementary players. A player who scores 20,000 points at high usage is less impressive than one who scores 25,000 at moderate usage with high efficiency.
