PER (Player Efficiency Rating)
A per-minute rating of a player's statistical production — league average is 15, elite is 25+.
PER (Player Efficiency Rating), created by John Hollinger, compresses all box score statistics into a single per-minute rating. It accounts for positive contributions (points, rebounds, assists, steals, blocks) and negative ones (missed shots, turnovers, fouls), adjusted for pace.
PER benchmarks: - 35+: all-time historic season (Jokic 2024, Giannis 2020) - 25–34: MVP-caliber - 20–24: All-Star caliber - 15–19: above average to average (15 = league average) - Below 15: below average
PER has limitations: it undervalues defense, overvalues volume scoring, and is pace-dependent. Box Plus/Minus (BPM) and Win Shares are considered more robust. However, PER remains widely cited and easily understood.
AllFame uses PER as part of the Peak Performance dimension for NBA players, capturing offensive dominance during a player's best stretch.
